I got two requests from people whom I do not know, claiming to be people that I’ve worked with (when it never happened). We have never met, so obviously we haven’t done business before.
You may be saying, “It’s a social networking site, come on. The point is to meet people and broaden your network,” but I’m receiving this request from someone who probably added a ton of other guys. What’s the value in adding someone whom you have no idea how you guys can work together? It just comes off as being a spammer, and someone who just wants to increase the network without maintaining quality contacts, and is adding me so you will have permission to spam me with your company products. (Oh yeah, look at the “Can you endorse me?” message – that’s what I received after accepting a random request. Lesson learnt.)
The thing is, adding a personal note makes a huge difference. For me, tell me who you are, what you do, and how you see we can potentially collaborate. It doesn’t even really matter to me whether you merely changed the recipient name; as long as I know that you are human and you are sincere in your invitation to connect. It really is senseless to add people whom do not value add.
Well, that’s just me. What are your thoughts on accepting strangers on LinkedIn?
